Behind the Writing of Drinks and Sinkholes

What special knowledge or research was required to write this book?

Bread making! I actually started making sourdough last fall so I could have some tactile knowledge of how Bev makes her rosemary bread. Now I bake roughly 1-2 loaves a week (and somehow got roped into making bread for communion at church too), and I don’t know if I’ll go back to commercial bread. It’s not quite as pretty as what I envision Bev making, but practice makes perfect.

What do you hope readers will take away from this story?

I hope that readers find this book to be like a warm hug. The stakes are low, the characters are lovable (even Etheldra) and the atmosphere is homey and comforting. I’ve had several readers reach out and tell me this found them at just the right time during a difficult period, and I’m so grateful Bev could be a calming presence to them.

Was there something major that happened in your personal life while writing this?

(TW Pregnancy complications) Not with the first book, but as I was gearing up to write the second book, I was hospitalized with some pregnancy complications that put me on bedrest for a few weeks. My toddler went off to daycare, and I was stuck at home on the couch all day with nothing else to do but bang out words, so I wrote the second book in just under 16 days. Happily, my son was born full term and perfect…just a few days after I put a pin in Book 3, too!

Synopsis:

Warm beds, cozy mysteries, and the best rosemary bread this side of Pigsend Creek. Welcome to the Weary Dragon Inn.

Bev may not know who she was before she showed up in the quaint village of Pigsend five years ago, but that doesn’t bother her much. She’s made a tidy little life for herself as the proprietor of the Weary Dragon Inn, where the most notable event is when she makes her famous rosemary bread.

But when earthquakes and sinkholes start appearing all over town, including near Bev’s front door, she’s got to put on her sleuthing hat to figure out what—or who—might be causing them before the entire town disappears.

Drinks and Sinkholes is the first book in the Weary Dragon Inn Series, a cozy fantasy mystery by award-winning author S. Usher Evans.
