Behind the Writing of Blood Drake

Tell us about a theme within your work and why you wanted to highlighted in this book.

The theme of overcoming nihilism runs deep throughout the world of Magi Codex. In fact, it’s a core theme is nearly all my works. Blood Drake’s characters are faced with the challenge of finding meaning and purpose in a world that can often feel bleak and devoid of hope. But despite the obstacles they face, they refuse to give in to despair and instead choose to fight for what they believe in. They come to understand that life has a deeper meaning and that their actions can have a lasting impact on the world around them. The novel’s message is one of resilience and determination, reminding us that even in the darkest of times, we have the power to find hope and create a better future, but without falling into a simplistic worldview of good vs evil, where good will obviously triumph. It is a call to arms against the forces of nihilism, urging us to embrace life with all of its ups and downs and to never give up on our dreams.

What special knowledge or research was required to write this book?

I find researching Latin names, Old Roman city names, and lesser known Roman deities to be a crucial aspect of my writing process. I take great care in selecting names that are historically accurate, while also making sure that they fit the tone and aesthetic of my world. Family names all stem from city names, as every great family started as outsiders, and it was originally meant to instill humility in the Magi, but over time it became yet another means for establishing superiority within their ranks. Camarillas are all named after deities, Roman deities being the most predominate. Every word on the page, has at least one word of research notes to match.

What do you hope readers will take away from this story?

Blood Drake is a captivating story, and its powerful characters remind me of the strength and determination that lies within. The tale of bravery and overcoming adversity inspires me to keep pushing forward, no matter what obstacles I may face. Blood Drake serves as a source of encouragement, reminding me to never give up on my dreams and to keep striving toward success. I hope it inspires you as much as it has me.

Synopsis:

Dragons are to be feared? Whatever.

With the vampires out of Austin I am finally able to focus on building my own camarilla. Not that the universe gives a dragon’s flame about my plans. Come hell or high water I’m going to find a way to save my scaley friend and make connections along the way.

Figuring out how to build my following proved to be harder than I anticipated. Apparently joining a destitute camarilla is on no one’s agenda, even if we boast the highest vampire kill count. When all seems hopeless, a nephew out of Rufus’s camarilla bows to my leadership. His joining brings new motivations for me to get on with my true passion.

Killing every vampire in Texas.

Though it won’t be easy since Prisca’s old camarilla has been working with the enemy all along. The universe isn’t playing fair when you eradicate the vampires, only to discover we’d been battling the magi all along. I won’t let anyone stop me from achieving my goal, not even my own kind.
