A quaint bookshop, a sprinkle of magic, and a dash of mystery.

Tell us about the background for the theme, what inspired it or why you wanted to write in this setting, or with play with these tropes?

When I first started writing The Mystery in the Margins, I was inspired by the idea of blending a cozy small-town atmosphere with a touch of magical intrigue. As a big fan of Gilmore Girls, I wanted to capture that same cozy, comforting feeling and combine it with my love for fantasy. Havenwood, with its quaint charm and enchanting secrets, became the perfect backdrop for a story where the ordinary meets the extraordinary. I envisioned a place where every corner of town could hold a hidden story, where the people you pass on the street might just have a bit of magic of their own. The tight-knit magical community of Havenwood, mixed with the thrill of solving a good mystery, made this project an absolute joy to write.

What special knowledge or research was required to write this book?

Writing The Mystery in the Margins was an adventure that led me down some fascinating research paths. To bring Havenwood to life, I explored small-town histories, folklore, various types of magic, and, of course, some mouth-watering recipes to make the world feel as cozy and enchanting as possible. The magical elements, while playful, needed to be rooted in something tangible, so I delved into old myths and legends to weave into the story’s fabric. All of this research was a delight and helped me create a world that I hope readers will want to revisit again and again.

What do you hope readers will take away from this story?

At its heart, The Mystery in the Margins is about the importance of community, friendship, and the quiet strength we all carry within us, even in uncertain times. I hope readers find comfort in the cozy warmth of Havenwood, experience the thrill of the mystery, and maybe even see a bit of themselves in the characters’ journeys. Most of all, I hope this story reminds readers that magic can be found in the most unexpected places—even in the margins of a well-loved book.

L.L. Gray writes darkly funny, fast-paced fantasy with captivating characters. When she isn’t writing, she embarks on magical adventures with her children by having make-believe battles with invading elves or righting ridiculous pranks by those mischievous gnomes who live next door.

As a long time lover of fantasy and myths, she hopes you enjoy her contributions to the world of magic.
