Behind the Writing of Sweet Tea and Suspects
Tell us about the background for the theme, what inspired it or why you wanted to write in this setting, or with play with these tropes?
My book series, Small Town Girl Mysteries, takes place in a small southern Louisiana village, less than 300 people. The town itself is a supporting character, with a subplot always following something quirky going on with the residents. My husband and I were involved in community theatre for many years, and we experienced a lot of drama. When it came time for my next book in this series, I knew immediately what the setting would be.
Are any of your characters based on real people you know?
Maybe just a little 🙂 But all the suspects are named after my friend and fellow author Savy Loy’s six kids.
Which of the side characters would you love to explore more, or turn into a main character in another series?
Both main characters are without vehicles during the book, and small town resident Roby Melancon is their taxi driver. He was a lot of fun to write—he chauffeurs the little ladies to bridge and their doctors’ appointments, loves his mama and good Southern cooking, and strives to be a successful business owner. During the he works hard to expand his taxi service to delivering all kinds of things, and he laments that he’s still single and can’t find a good woman. I hope to include him in future books, with a growing business and maybe a successful love life.

Synopsis:
The community theater is putting on “Death of a Salesman”, but someone has turned the play into reality!
Who killed Daniel Sullivan, star of the show and all-around jerk? Hometown heroine Jen Guidry was arrested, but did she really do it? Maybe it was the director, or the understudy? It could have been the producer, or the naïve ingenue. There are more suspects than cups of sugar in a pitcher of sweet tea.
Can Ev and Shorty solve their fifth case and bring the killer to justice? Regardless, the show must go on!
This book is the fifth of the Small-Town Girl Mysteries, a clean faith-based series of books with no profanity, sex, or graphic violence.
